Selimiye Mosque in State of Disrepair

ZAMAN DAILY NEWSPAPER (200405118362): "Selimiye Mosque in State of Disrepair

The historical Selimiye Mosque, a UN World Heritage site, continues to decay due to negligence.
Deep cracks in the walls and on the domes of the mosque have been discovered. Most of the original figures on the walls have been destroyed by rainwater that leaks into the mosque. Burglary is another source of worry. Four brass faucets and more than 500 priceless ceramic tiles have been stolen from the mosque. Police have still not tracked down the burglars who managed to enter the 'Sultan's Mahfil' (the Sultan's private box) and steal the tiles. The mahfil was always kept off limits to the public. "
